Public waiting for train were left in shock as they found a train coming into the station, with a human head hanging in front of the engine.
They saw a severed head sticking to the cowcatcher of a train’s engine According to sources, the loco pilot of Sabari Express heard a strange noise and sensed that the engine had hit a man on the tracks between Sulur and Somanur.
However, upon reaching the Coimbatore juntion at 9.15 am, he inspected the front portion of the engine and saw a head stuck in cowcatcher. The loco pilot informed the station manager, L Chinna Raj, who in turn alerted the railway police.
Meanwhile, noticing unusual activities near the engine, passengers gathered near the engine and were shocked to witness the workers pulling a man’s head out and then carrying it along the platform.
Meanwhile, the mystery about the head was resolved after Podanur railway police reported that they have found the body of a male without head on the tracks between Sulur and Somanur.
However, till late night, police were unable to confirm the identity of the victim. Sub-inspector Selvarani said, “The evidence collected so far indicate that it was a case of suicide. The body had been mutilated badly. Apparently, the man was lying on the tracks when the train ran over him. However, the nature of death could be confirmed only after the autopsy.” Meanwhile, Podanur and Coimbatore railway police personnel have registered separate cases.
According to sources, in case the body parts were found to be of the same person, separate inquest would be conducted since the parts were collected from spots that came within the jurisdictions of two different police stations.
The body has been sent to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
